The purpose of this field trial is to gather user feedback and data from drivers in several urban retail markets, including the New York City Tri-State area, Boston, Hartford, L.A., San Francisco, San Diego and Sacramento. This information will be used to improve BMW’s first mass-produced electric vehicles, the i3 and i8, which debuted at the L.A. Auto Show in November 2011. This field trial is an exciting and important step toward developing high-performance electric vehicles. With the BMW ActiveE sedan, drivers can expect the same BMW German-engineered performance with the addition of the new environmentally friendly all-electric ActiveE drive system and a powerful lithium ion battery. Data from this trial will go directly into product development for vehicles that will be released in the near future.

To become part of this trial, electronauts must apply online and complete a home energy evaluation to determine if the BMW ActiveE charging station can be installed. This consultation costs $100, which will be refunded as an installation credit. Electronauts will be signing a non-renewable, two-year lease and receiving their vehicles in early 2012 directly from the state-of-the-art factory in Leipzig, Germany. The lease includes $2,250 down and monthly payments of $499. Urban drivers in Europe and China will also be getting in on this exciting new field trial.
